Mixed Feelings

So, I've been training and riding the bike on the stationary trainer for a couple of weeks now. Tomorrow I go out into the real world. I'm riding to Picture Butte! Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I don't get a flat tire and I don't cramp up and hopefully I make it.
You know, I've been talking up this 400 km thing quite a bit. Most people are impressed (including myself) that I'm actually going to do this. Today, I found out that a couple of friends of mine - female friends - took a bicycle trip from Winnipeg to California a few years ago. They went an average of 100 kms per day for 32 days!!! For crying out loud, I better be able to do this...

My butt hurts

Bought a very important piece of clothing from MEC the other day - bike shorts. The $59 price tag is going to be well worth it from what I hear from my friends.
I got on the bike yesterday for the first time in, well, ever! The only bike riding I've ever done to this point in my life was on my bmx kuwahara in jr. high school. Since then, I can honestly say that I've never really done much of any riding whatsoever.
Now, my training regiment consists of an hour a day on the "saddle". For the first week, I'm just trying to continue peddling (with a short water break every, say, 5 minutes) for the full hour. Next week I'm going to do 10 minute intervals of hard riding and spinning the tires as it were. I'm gearing up for a ride into Lethbridge in a couple of weeks. Hope I make it.
Tonight I got online to check into some cream for the sensitive areas of my body. I'm going to Lethbridge tomorrow. I'll be sure to pick some up, along with some Ibuprofen...

I guess this is for real

Ok, I've turned 40, I've got a wife and 3 kids, a couple gray hairs, I'm heading out on a 400 km bike trip, and oh, I'm BLOGGING... must be mid life crisis or something.
Not really sure how to BLOG. This could be interesting. Gotta get with the times though.
So, I've started training for this Ride for a Reason (http://www.rideforareason.ca/). My good friends are quite the cyclists and it was a great fundraiser last year for the camp so I'm going to hang out with them and see if my body can handle this. I'm quite proud of the fact that my lungs still work really well, but it's my legs that need to get in better shape. I'll keep you posted.
